The Arden Motorsport team will welcome Ginetta Junior graduate, Zak Taylor to pilot one of the ‘Red Arrows’ in 2021 as the team prepares to challenge for the drivers and rookies titles in what could be one of the most exciting seasons yet for the team.

Zak has been named as one of two drivers announced so far with a third to be announced in due course. Zak joins YRDA athlete and Karting graduate Thomas Ikin who will both be racing in single seaters for the first time.

We spoke to Zak as he begins preparation for this season and talked to him about how testing has been going already.

How excited are you to be making the step up to British F4?

“I am very excited. It is a prestigious championship and to be making my first step onto the FIA single seater ladder with Arden behind me is what any driver would want.”

How did you find your first season of car racing in Ginetta Junior?

“Overall, it was a good learning curve to start my car racing career off. I achieved some good results, with the highlights being a maiden podium in the first round of the season as well as multiple rookie podiums and fastest laps. The season didn’t end well due to unforeseen circumstances, while running P5 in the championship, however I’m sure the achievements will be even greater now I am running with a professional team behind me.”

Do you feel this has been a strong preparation for the season ahead?

“With the differences between the cars being so much it’s been something the team and I have been working on throughout December testing, adapting my driving to suit the F4, but this has been quick learning. Having been to all of the BTCC tracks during my time in Ginetta’s, I have a good amount of knowledge that I can take into the 2021 season and I’m looking forward to getting out on these tracks in the F4.”

What were you first thoughts of the car when testing it with Arden?

“I felt confident in the car straight away and loved being out in something different to what I was used to. It is obviously different to a Ginetta, but after driving it for the first time at Anglesey, I never looked back. Following the test my mind was set for what I wanted to race in 2021, and with the huge support of my parents and Arden, it’s great that this opportunity has arisen.”

How have you found working with the team so far?

“I have found the team great. Since my first time at the factory in September I have felt welcome and have fit in straight away which is brilliant. Everyone in the team has been so helpful and it’s been great working with them. The test days we have done during December have been very successful, working well with the team to improve and it’s been great to get those days under my belt going into 2021.”

Are you excited to be following in the footsteps of Oscar Piastri, Alex Quinn and Olli Caldwell as an Arden F4 racer?

“These drivers have all been very successful and to have the same or if not greater successes of which they have had would be great, for both myself and the team.”

What are your goals for your first season?

“With it being my first season in single seaters it’s going to be a challenge, however I am looking forward to working hard with the team to push for podiums throughout the season and achieve some great results with Arden alongside me and I can’t wait to get started at Brands Hatch in April.”

Testing will resume when possible with the first round of the season at Brands Hatch currently scheduled for the 3rd/4th April. Keep an eye on the YRDA social media pages and website for further announcements regarding who will be joining Zak and Tom in the 2021 season.
