After two months out the seat Tom Ikin returns to the track in style as he took victory at round seven of the MBKC championship in Senior Max! From fourth on the grid it took Tom just one lap to hit the front and from there he held off all challenges thrown at him and took a momentous victory.

Tom joined the #YRDArmy back in July halfway through his first year in the Senior Rotax class. With limited track time, it has not been the easiest transition, but Tom has impressed at both MBKC and TVKC where he finished eighth on his debut earlier this year. Our goal was to help get Tom ready for a potential British Championship assault and this result demonstrates how quickly Tom is progressing.

In a competitive Senior Max field close racing was expected, particularly with the nature of the Three Sisters circuit. Tom hit the ground running in the opening heat as he charged through to finish second from fifth on the grid. With mixed conditions, the eventual race winner seemed to have a clear pace advantage over the rest of the field so although a good result Tom still knew he had work to do!

Heat two provided even tougher conditions with Tom starting in the middle of the pack. But he made quick progress through the field getting up to third from tenth after just four laps! But his hard work would all come undone after he was forced back to ninth just a lap later. Tom would eventually finish eighth but it was a disappointing result and would make his task in the final even more difficult.

There would once again be wet conditions for the final and from fourth on the grid Tom wasted no time in making positions. He hit the front on the opening lap and had already built himself a lead of almost one second! The early stages saw Tom and the two drivers in chase exchanging fastest laps which resulted in the trio breaking away from the rest of the field.

The danger man for Tom would be Kasey Watson as the race entered the second half. Watson was setting fastest laps and in the slipstream around an extremely quick Three Sisters circuit, was able to close in. But once behind Tom, he struggled to find a way passed with Tom making no mistakes.

Tom drove the last lap cool under pressure and went on to take a brilliant victory! As he prepares to race in the TVKC Autumn Cup next weekend it was a great confidence booster and demonstrates that the hard work he has been putting in off track is paying off.

He is now certainly one to watch in Senior Max for the rest of the season.
