Josh Irfan bows out of Mini 60 with podium finish

July 30, 2019

After a glittering career in the class Josh Irfan raced in the 60 Mini class for the final time last weekend and went out in style finishing on the podium in round four of the Italian ACI Karting Championship. The Tony Kart driver will now shift his focus to the OK Junior class as he prepares for his debut.

With 70 drivers entered it was set to be another tough weekend at a track that is familiar to most of the field in Adria Raceway. But Josh got the weekend off to a good start with a good qualifying session putting himself eleventh overall. The result would put him fifth on the grid for all of his heats giving him a great chance at a result for the weekend.

Josh kept a clean pair of heals in the heats finishing sixth in the opening race before going on to finish fourth and fifth. Another result like that would have left Josh well inside the top ten but he boosted himself up the grid even further as he took victory in the final heat putting him fifth on the grid for final one.

In a tough first final Josh found himself fighting with fellow countryman William Macintyre for the final step on the podium. With the traitorous conditions forcing a single file start visibility was poor and just getting round in one piece seemed an achievement! But Josh drove a clever race sitting in behind Macintyre before making a huge lunge on the final lap to cleanly steal the final step on the podium leaving Macintyre no time to fight back!

There would be no huge improvements in conditions for race two and after getting forced back to fifteenth on the opening lap Josh would eventually recover and finish eleventh place. Although a slightly disappointing result Josh would bow out with a podium in race one, which was a fitting end to a brilliant Mini 60 career!

Josh has now immediately began testing in OK Junior as he begins preparations to make his debut in the class. Be sure to keep an eye out on our social media for full updates on Josh’s plans in the class.
