As the latest plans for a revised British F4 Calendar are announced, Alex sets his eyes on the prize as he aims to carry his momentum from his storming 2019 campaign. Alex ended strongly last season with his first overall podium and followed that up with a win on the Formula One weekend in Abu Dhabi in UAE F4. The goal for 2020 is clear for Alex, but it isn’t all about the drivers’ championship.
Alex Connor: “My goals for the 2020 season is to win the drivers’ championship and help the team win the team championship as well.”
Alongside his highly talented teammates in both 2019 Ginetta Junior driver, Roman Bilinski and 2020 rookie and fellow #YRDArmy member Frederick Lubin. With a huge amount of talent driving the Arden machines the goal of team champions is a strong possibility.
Learning from past experiences is one of Alex’s key strengths and his strong 2019 campaign in the UK was an incredible foundation to build from! Rookie wins, pole positions and overall podiums made up an impressive debut for the youngest driver on the British F4 grid at just 15 years old.
Alex Connor: “Last season was a really big learning curve for me as everything was new. The main things that I wanted to take away from it was how I need to train in the pre-season. I think my standout moment from 2019 was the last round which gave me a lot of confidence as I had a double pole and was making big steps forwards throughout the race weekend.”
The past season also presented Alex with the amazing opportunity to head over to the UAE to line up alongside former academy member Logan Hannah in a duel in the desert at the Formula One season finale! For any driver that is the highest stage to compete on with the entire F1 paddock and a huge number of fans watching on. It was clearly something Alex thrived on as he went on to take a 1st and 3rd place giving him overall victory in the Trophy round.
Alex Connor: “I think that result has given me a lot of confidence. It has also helped me under pressure as I now know what it is like to deal with the pressure of leading an F4 race.”
That was followed by a successful test with Arden in the Formula Renault Eurocup which has already created a path for Alex to follow going forwards.
As with all drivers at this time racing has been brought to a standstill across the globe, but that hasn’t stopped Alex in his preparations for 2020 as he is keeping fit and helping out at the farm where he is staying.
With the aim of the championship set in his sights Alex has had a strong start to his is Pre- season with Arden, getting many laps under his belt, in what was a highly intensive testing programme.
Alex Connor: “Pre-season has been very positive so far as I am at the top of the timesheets which gives me a good indication when going into the race weekends.”
As many sporting legends say being a champion is also a mind set and Alex, who is known for his great personality is keen to use this in his journey towards his goals.
Alex Connor: “I think that my main characteristic is my personality and I think that will help me succeed in my career.”
As with all our YRDA athletes a strong focus lies in preparation. For Alex, he believes this attention to detail in ensuring a driver is best prepared for his 2020 charge. With help in fitness, branding, and driver coaching as we head towards the planned season start date of the 1st of August the YRDA has been helping Alex alongside all other athletes ahead of this.
Alex Connor: “The YRDA has helped me a lot in the preparation into the 2020 season as I have been able to use the simulator and have access to the experience of Steve Hutchinson both track side and in the sim as well as Chris Ray’s performance coaching and the performance testing that was carried out through the YRDA at the Porsche Human Performance Centre.”
As we head towards a highly anticipated 2020 season Alex Connor has only one goal; to win! Strong teammates and the infamous Arden team will be sure to provide him with a great foundation to work from. Be sure to keep up to date as we track his progress through this season as the highly talented Connor Guns For Gold.
