Ginetta Junior Championship
The Ginetta Junior Championship headed north for rounds 16-17 of the series. Tom Canning set the 14th fastest time in timed qualifying, after falling victim to the strict track limit infringements applied in the Ginetta Juniors this weekend. His second fastest time was good enough for 13th overall, meaning he would start the races from P!4 and P13 respectively.
The opening race took place on Sunday morning, Canning made a good start gaining two positions from the get go and maintain a strong pace throughout the early stages - avoiding incidents around him as his rivals were taking liberties with the large sausage kerbs on the exit of the chicane. This was to his benefit, as he kept his nose clean to execute some clean and decisive overtakes to get himself into 10th position.
Contact however forced him back down the order - Canning had sustained damage to his car and lost a lot of time after the contact forced him off the circuit. He finished 14th at the flag, which did not reflect the pace he had shown throughout the race.
Race two and starting from the inside was to Canning's advantage on the opening lap. He continued to make good progress through the race, as again the action was frantic with numerous contact throughout the race. Canning had moved himself up to 10th once again just before the safety car was deployed on lap 9.
The restart saw him maintain position, as the cars all followed each other in a tight snake around the twisty and undulating Knockhill circuit. Canning began to make further progress in the closing stages - performing an optimistic overtake on two of his Rookie rivals to take a very strong and battling 8th position at the chequered flag.
This also meant Canning took 2nd in the Rookie classification, earning him a spot on the Rookie Podium to cap off a strong end to the weekend.
The results mean Tom Canning is 13th overall in his maiden season in the championship on 148 points - just 27 off the top ten with nine races still to run in the season.
Rockingham Motorsport Speedway hosts the next round of the Ginetta Junior Championship on the 26-27 August. Catch all the three Ginetta Junior races on ITV4 over the course of the weekend, ran alongside the British Touring Car Championship.
