Abbie Munro to make single seater debut in Champion of Brands

Abbie Munro will make her single seater debut this weekend as she prepares to race in the Champion of Brands at Donington Park. Taking place over five weekends this will be the only weekend we see the best Formula Ford racers go head to head at Donington Park. Racing will all take place on Sunday with Qualifying in the morning followed by two races.

Abbie will be racing with Oldfield Motorsport, a team familiar to the #YRDArmy after they quickly got Tommy Foster up to speed in the class last year which led to him winning races within no time. It’s fair to say Abbie is going to be in very safe hands this weekend.

Testing has already begun and will continue tomorrow before Abbie will return to Donington Park on Sunday. The National layout will be used which means it is going to be a very quick lap, but Formula Ford has always provided close racing which will be perfect experience for Abbie in her debut weekend.

Abbie has had experience in single seaters having done some testing in the Arden Motorsport British F4 car last year. Having that experience under her belt will be a huge help to Abbie, but she will now have to adapt from a car with downforce to a car with no wings and subsequently no downforce.

Although it is going to a difficult task Abbie comes in having done lots of preparation off track. Being on the YRDA programme Abbie has taken advantage of our in-house simulator to do lots of testing ahead of the event. On top of that Abbie has been doing lots of training to make sure she is in the best shape possible for the event.

Abbie Munro: “I am delighted to announce that I will be racing in a number of Formula Ford races this year with Oldfield Motorsport. James and his team have a lot of experience and knowledge and I can’t wait to learn from all of them as I make my first steps into the world of single seater racing.”
James Oldfield: “We are very excited to welcome another YRDA driver into our team and Formula Ford 1600, Abbie comes forward from the YRDA and Arden with great experience and ability of already driving the British F4 car, proving to have quickly adapted from karts to cars last year, and with our recent success with fellow YRDA driver Tommy Foster, we are very keen if she can follow in Tommy’s footsteps.

You can keep up to date with Abbie’s progress over the weekend on all the YRDA social media channels and look out for our weekly report to follow with further updates.
